About Us
The Sunnyside Community’s state of deterioration has been a concern for many, over the last several years. Concerns weighted heavier on the hearts of the local ministers of Sunnyside, whereas they began to pursue efforts to revitalize the community. One issue was to repair homes for Senior Citizens. Not long ago, communities across the City of Houston and Harris County, were involved in an Urban Renewal Project, known as Private Sector Initiative, PSI, for short. The introduction implementation and administration of such project top the Sunnyside sector of our city and were made possible through Rev. E. R. Curvey, Pastor of the Sunnyside Missionary Baptist Church. Under the direction of the Community Coordinator Rev. E. R.Curvey, clean up efforts to eradicate the presence of drug trafficking and criminal activities transpired, as well as the establishment of a Community Police Storefront. These results promoted the urgency to involve various Pastors. In time, subsequently an even greater wave of concern for Urban Renewal was formulating itself in what has become known today as Community Development Corporation or CDC’s for short. This movement and it’s intent spread through and was accepted. Several meetings were held. Rev. James Jackson and Rev. Wayman Yancey were directed to the most needed area in the Sunnyside area. Norris Davis encouraged the group to continue in the revitalization movement. In January 1996, from these meeting dialogues, an official meeting was held to began organization of what is now known as HOLMES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Those present were Rev. Elbert R. Curvey, Rev. James Jackson, Rev. Acie J. Jefferson, Jr., and Rev. Wayman Yancey. Rev. E. R. Curvey directed this meeting. However, he felt that he could not continue as spokesman for the newly formed group, in that he had many other projects pressing his limited time. Upon his insistence, the agreement of all those who were present, Rev. Acie J. Jefferson, Jr. was placed as lead person. The very next meeting, the name of the CDC was confirmed and the stipulation of financial support was established. Establishing officers made further shaping of the organization. Under the leadership of Rev. Acie J. Jefferson, Jr. Pastor of the Pentecostal Missionary Baptist Church, several strides were made. The word was out and the mission of Holmes CDC attracted other local Pastors such as Rev. Harold Moore, Rev. James Nash and Rev. Kenneth Rose, so much so they became Board Members. Holmes CDC has conquered many mountains. It has been recognized as a 501(C)(3), received certification as a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO), we have involved community residents as well as community business owners in our project. The vision of revitalizing the Sunnyside Community is now beginning to unfold. We have begun the process of building affordable homes. Since we began construction in 2002, Holmes CDC held homebuyer’s fair and built 45 homes, which were all sold. Our targeted group is the low-to-modern income families, however, we’re not limiting the homes to just this group. We invite anyone that’s excited about our vision, to come, be apart of our vision and share the vision. For there are GREAT THINGS that are beginning to happen in the SUNNYSIDE AREA!!!!!!
